Headway of E Money (The Journey):
In 1983, David Chaum issued a seminal paper outlining the concept of digital cash. Building on
this research, he founded DigiCash in Amsterdam in 1989 with the aim of commercializing
electronic money. Despite its innovative approach, DigiCash filed for bankruptcy in 1998.
E-Gold,
introduced in 1996, became the first widely adopted form of internet-based currency, attracting
several million users before being shut down by the United States government in 2008. Both U.S.
authorities and academic researchers have described e-gold as a form of "digital money."
In 1998, PayPal launched its U.S. dollar-denominated online payment service, further advancing
electronic financial transactions. The landscape shifted significantly in 2009 with the
introduction of Bitcoin, marking the emergence of decentralized, blockchain-based digital
currencies that operate without a central authority or backing by physical assets.
